Changing jobs can get complicated when you have a good relationship with your current boss. I occasionally hear, “I should talk to my boss before I accept anything.”
Be careful. Once you’ve told your employer that you’re considering leaving, the relationship changes.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Make your decision first. If the new opportunity is right for you, accept it. Then resign professionally.
- Don’t confuse loyalty with obligation. You can appreciate your employer and still decide it’s time to move on. You work with them, not for them.
- Would your supervisor do the same? If your supervisor were considering an opportunity elsewhere, would they discuss it with you? Probably not.
- Two weeks’ notice is customary. Some professionals have contractually agreed to give a month or longer. Think carefully before agreeing to that. A future employer may not be willing to wait, and it could limit your career options.
- Remember where you’re going. Worrying too much about inconveniencing the employer you’re leaving can send the wrong message to the company you’re joining. They want someone who’s excited about the new opportunity.
Leave professionally. Don’t burn bridges. But once you’ve decided to make a move, focus on where you’re going, not where you’ve been.
